The Hamilton Cemetery, on York Blvd, is on land once known as Burlington Heights and was the site of a strategic point of defence against the invading American forces during the War of 1812. Remnant of the ramparts can still be seen within the cemetery. Instead of erecting a plaque for the 100th anniversary, this marker was designed to blend in with the other grave markers in the cemetery.

I like it. Interesting that they chose to blend it into it's surroundings.
Beneath Thy Feet
Like how this marker blends in with the other cemetery features rather than appear "more important"! I think that was a great choice! Looks like a very interesting cemetery!
A very important spot, marked the Canadian way, understated, which wouldn't have been the case had the 'Mericans won! They tend not to understate anything.
I am not even sure the Americans are commemorating this one. We in Ontario certainly are!
Fascinating...I don't think many people in this country have even heard of the War of 1812, much less have any idea what it was about or who was involved. Therefore, it is very doubtful that we commemorate much of anything about the War of 1812!
:)
interesting. also the comments!
i agree, americans like everything big. and certainly this kind of stuff
... ooo ... touche ...
Ah ... yes ... so xx12 has rolled around again ... interesting to read Lowell's comment. Are they commemmorations planned for the 200th anniversary? They blending in of the centennial memorial is indicative of the difference between the combatants, I suspect.
What does it mean 'outwork'? I have never read that sort of expression before ...
Oh yes, many commemorations are planned (see the above post for one) This part of Ontario is where most of it happened and there are many re-enactments going on for the next 3 years.
a lesser trench or fortification built out beyond the main defences
I was not familiar with that term either.
apparently Harper is big on this sort of thing...
whereas the governor of New York is giving the whole thing a miss.
