Ithamar Smuck was one of four children born to Jacob Smuck and Margaret Taylor. Ithamar was saddled with a family name of his grandmother Lucinda Shaw and his siblings were named Alice, James and Austin .
The family moved to Ontario in the late 1700s where they farmed in Glanford.
Ithamar and Agnes would have three children - Alexander who died in 1909 at 2 mos, Lyle who was born in 1910 and was possibly still living after 2007 when his sister Anne died (b 1918) since his death is not noted in the family genealogy chart.
Agnes lived to a good age of 93, surviving her husband by eleven years more than he lived.

Oh dear, Smuck goes well with my Fanny Brewer for not so great names. Beautiful stone.
Beneath Thy Feet
So, what's in a name. I don't think parents are really thinking when they give their children unusual names. Great find!
To have one 'unusual' name may be regarded as a misfortune, but to have two........
Channeling OW ...
And Nicola has taken my line ... I was going to link the two names FB and Smuck. I can see why Agnes retained Mitchell on her tombstone. Gee she lived for a long time after her husband died ... must have been tough.
Looking at your dates, I gather that photo to have been taken about 1919, with Lyle and a very young Ann. Yet with Ithamar still living, so 1919 is looking probable.
Ithamar Smuck ... enough to drive one to an early grave.
And ... I forgot to say ... I too like that stone very much. Love the crimson inking ...
I have never heard the name Ithamar.
just looked it up and it means 'palm island'
which makes this choice (and combination) even stranger!!
That would be a tough name to live with...but then, one of the U.S. volleyball girls has a last name of Hooker. Can't imagine how much teasing she has received with that moniker!
Interesting post as are all your tragic stuff!
would that be Destiny Hooker? that also sounds unbearable.
An impressive stone and an interesting story...
Ithamar was his grandfather's name, I am descended from this family
People used to give their children family names, back then people didn't give unusual names just to be different. His great grandfather was Ithamar Shaw, who was one of the first settlers in Glanford Township. Ithamar Shaw was captured by Chippewa Indians as a young boy and was brought there by the indians and raised by them until he reached manhood. The name was passed down for several generations. I am descended from this family
