An Eagle (or, as has been suggested, an Albatross) superimposed on a circlet surmounted by a crown. The original circlet was a garter and buckle from 1918 to 1923. The motto translate as "Through Adversity to the Stars"

I was reading about WWII and its aftermath today...this just brought the horror of war home again. A dead hero is still dead and a waste of a life. So sad.
Very nice, clear photo -- and thanks for the info about the garter and buckle - I was wondering about that.
Interesting to have an RAF grave from WWI. I googled the badge and it did say it was originally an eagel, although I have to say it doesn't look very eagel like.
